Massachusetts artist Louis Richardson was born in New Bedford and lived there all of his life. As an artist, he was a pioneer in promoting the appreciation of local art in his city. Richardson was a charter member of the New Bedford Art Club, and later organized the New Bedford Fine Arts Society in 1921. A self-taught painter, he became an early inhabitant of Salters Point in South Dartmouth, where he set up his studio and became known for his tonal paintings of the salt marshes. As well as being a fine artists, he was also a talented baseball player, known as the "Home Run King of 1870."
