Born in Spencer, Massachusetts, Greenwood is Worcester's most treasured artist of the late 19th century. A prolific and largely self-taught artist, he also studied with Robert Swain Gifford. A true plein air artist, his works combine the influences of tonalism and impressionism. Greenwood exhibited at the Boston Art Club, the National Academy, and the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art. Most of his landscapes were painted in the environs of Central Massachusetts. His work has experienced renewed acclaim since a 2004 special exhibition at the Worcester Art Museum.
