James King Bonnar was born in North Adams, Massachusetts and later lived in Newtonville, Massachusetts. He studied at the Mass. School of Art and with Joseph de Camp and Ernest L. Major. He was a member of the Rockport Art Association, and the North Shore Art Association, exhibiting from 1935 - 1946. In 1949 Bonnar was a founding member of the Newton Art Association. He also served as president of the Copley Society in Boston.
