A particularly lively and detailed work by a favorite Rhode Island artist. Known as the "Dean of Providence Artists. " George William Whitaker was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, and was a key figure, along with Edward Bannister, Sydney Burleigh, and Charles Walter Stetson, in the very active New Bedford and Providence art scene during the late 19th century. Whitaker exhibited at the Brooklyn Academy, the National Academy, the Boston Art Club, the PAFA, Doll & Richards, the Providence Art Club (founder), the Providence Watercolor Club, and at RISD where he was an instructor. He is best known for his tonalist landscapes, reflecting his years at Barbizon and Fountainebleau.
