A fine 19th c. New Hampshire oil sketch. Shattuck was born in Francestown, New Hampshire and specialized in scenes of the White Mountains. In 1860 he married the sister of artist Samuel Colman. He also painted in upstate New York, and was one of the first artists to paint on Monhegan Island. Shattuck lived in New York City from 1861 - 1884, and then in Granby, Connecticut - many of his works were farmyard scenes painted in Granby. He also invented the now-famous Shattuck stretcher, patented in 1883. A member of the National Academy, Shattuck also exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Brooklyn Art Association, and the New Britain Museum of Art. This work descended from the artist's daughter Helen Shattuck Stewart to his granddaughter Katherine Stewart Emigh and will be included in the Catalog Raisonne of the artist's works.
