A beautiful scene executed with fine detail. Van Gorder was born in Warren, Ohio. In 1886 he went to New York to study at the Art Students League with William Merritt Chase and Charles Yardley Turner. In 1894 he went to Paris and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and with Carolus-Duran. He returned to New York in 1896. He exhibited extensively during the 1880's and 1890's at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy, the Brooklyn Art Association, the Boston Art Club, the Paris Salon, the Pennsylvania Academy Annuals, and the Philadelphia Art Club.
