An enchanting portrait of a young girl set against the backdrop of the Berkshire mountains in summertime. Born in New York City, Josephine Paddock graduated from Barnard College and studied at the Art Students League with Kenyon Cox, William Merritt Chase, and John Alexander. Active in many art organizations, she was a member of the American Watercolor Society, Allied Artists, the Connecticut Association of Fine Art the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, Grand Central Art Galleries, the North Shore Art Association, the Rockport Art Association, Allied Artists and more. She often spent summers painting in Gloucester, and also had a home in the Litchfield area. During her lifetime she exhibited widely, winning many awards. She participated in the New York Armory Show of 1913, Corcoran biennials in 1914 and 1937, the Pennsylvania Academy Annuals 1914-1915 and 1935-1936, the National Academy, the Paris Salon, and many more. Her work included many portraits and is in the collections of Barnard College, Wesleyan College, and Colgate University.
