An exquisite 19th c. view painted with the detailed precision for which the artist is known. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Brownell lived in East Hartford from 1824 - 1860, giving up a law career in favor of landscape painting. He studied in Hartford with Julius Busch and Joseph Ropes. He also spent seven consecutive winters in Cuba, producing many studies of tropical scenery. He then lived in New York city for a few years, exhibiting at the National Academy and the Brooklyn Art Museum. He later settled in Bristol, Rhode Island. He traveled and painted in Europe, South America, and throughout the United States.
