Luvena Buchanan Vysekal (1873 - 1954)

A very special impressionistic kitty painted by an early modernist. Born in Iowa, Vysekal studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and also with John Vanderpoel, Harry Walcottt, John Norton, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, and Ralph Clarkson. She married artist Edouard Vysekal while in Chicago, and the couple moved to California on a mural commission in 1914. She was active in the California Art Club, the California Watercolor Society, and the California Progressives. During the 1920's and 1930's Vysekal won many prizes, exhibiting at the Los Angeles CMA, the Hollywood Club, the Federated Women's Club, and many more.
