An evocative summer scene fresh from the artist's estate. Volk was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He studied at St. Luke Academy in Rome, then in Paris with Gerome. Returning to the United States, he lived in New York City and in Centre Lovell, Maine. Volk exhibited widely, winning a gold medal at the National Academy in 1910, a medals at the St. Louis Exposition, the Columbian Exposition, and the Charleston Exposition. He was known for his figural work of women and children, often in dreamlike state.
