A colorful work by an excellent Old Lyme artist. Hoffman studied at the Art Students League with Frank Vincent Dumond, at the Yale Art School with John Ferguson Weir, and at the Academie Julien in Paris. He first visited Old Lyme in 1902 and became an important part of the artists group at Florence Griswold's home. At Old Lyme Hoffman was strongly influenced by the impressionistic work of Willard Metcalf. Hoffman was elected an Associate member of the National Academy in 1930. He traveled and exhibited widely, and was key in the preservation of the Florence Griswold house and its establishment as a museum.
