Cloud Shadows
oil on canvas, 24" x 29", signed lower left
A spectacular large work, fresh to the market, in original period Newcomb-Macklin frame. One of Boston's finest impressionist landscape painters. Kaula lived most of his professional life in Boston and in New Ipswich, New Hampshire. He studied at the Mass. Normal Art School and the Cowles Art School, in Paris at the Academie Julian and with Edmund Tarbell at the Boston Museum of Fine Art. Tarbell became his mentor and the two often painted together in New Hampshire. Kaula exhibited at the Boston Art Club, the Paris Salon, the Art Institute of Chicago, the PAFA, and many Boston galleries. He met his artist wife Lee Lufkin Kaula in Crecy, France in 1894 and they married in 1902. Upon their return to Boston, they kept a studio and home in the Fenway Studios.
